Audiology / Hearing

Hearing is a vital part of our lives - it enables us to communicate with others, connect with our environment, and it keeps us safe by warning us of potential danger. Loss of hearing can gradually take away the ability to connect to our surroundings and communicate with family, friends, and colleagues, leading to isolation and depression. While most hearing loss is the result of age, hearing loss can also stem from other types of damage.

Types & Causes of Hearing Loss

Conductive Hearing Loss (CHL)

Conductive hearing loss can be caused by wax build-up, eardrum perforation, middle ear fluid, or damage to the bones in the middle ear. This type of hearing loss may be correctable with procedures in the office or surgery, depending on the cause.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL)

Sensorineural hearing loss is caused by damage to the nerve endings in the inner ear or hearing nerve, most commonly as a result of aging or noise trauma. Hearing aids can help most people with sensorineural hearing loss. The sudden onset of sensorineural hearing loss should be evaluated immediately for rapid treatment and intervention.

Mixed Hearing Loss

This is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

During your examination, our audiologists will perform diagnostic tests to fully assess the type and degree of hearing loss, then develop strategies to increase hearing and reduce the stresses of hearing loss. Solutions can include assistive listening devices and state-of-the-art hearing instruments.

If you experience sudden or prolonged hearing loss, please contact our office to schedule an appointment with one of our audiologists.

Allergies

Allergens (such as chemicals, dust, pet dander, pollens, or mold) can stimulate the immune system causing a reaction of watery or itchy eyes, headaches, sneezing, nasal congestion or runny nose, and a sore throat. These symptoms are the result of allergic rhinitis.

Our Allergy and Asthma department offers evaluation, testing, and treatment for those suffering from seasonal or year-round allergies and asthma. Our board-certified allergist and physicians work with patients to determine the substances causing discomfort and develop a treatment plan based on the specific condition.

Allergy testing may be administered one of two ways:

  • Intradermal skin testing
  • Blood tests

While intradermal skin testing is the most reliable and most common allergy test, blood tests may be performed when skin testing cannot due to medications or skin conditions.

Once our allergist determines the allergens causing your symptoms, an effective treatment plan can be recommended. A treatment plan may be one of a number of options, including allergen avoidance education, over-the-counter and prescription medication therapy, and allergy immunotherapy (shots or drops).

If allergies are interferring with your quality of life, please contact our office to schedule an allergy evaluation.

While most people have problems falling asleep on occasion, sleep disorders are a regular occurrence and cause more than just daytime sleepiness.
